Artwork Description
Description
One of my favorite restorative practices is yoga nidra, which essentially is a guided meditation and Richard Miller’s iRest is the one I practice most often. At one point in the longer iRest meditation, Miller asks us to picture a space that feels safe and welcoming. For some reason, I always picture a little glade in the woods–it’s made warm by beams of sunlight falling through trees, gently lighting the forest floor.
It’s my go-to image when I want to feel centered and at peace, which is often a little surprising to me, considering I tend to be a bit more indoorsy than outdoorsy. But the idea of a forest glade never fails to soothe me: the feel of the cool air, the scent of the forest cedar and pines, the gentle chirps of song birds, and the freshness taken in with each breath.
This work of Joy celebrates that sense of calm respite. It allows you to be transported out of the frenetic energy of day to day life and into a space that’s peaceful and nurturing. Where do you need that feeling the most?
“Dappled Sunlight in the Glade” is a two-paneled painting and each panel measures 30”x30” on gallery-wrapped canvas. The paintings come wired and ready to hang in your home or office, or wherever you need a reliable spot for restoration and relaxation.

Artist Statement
I am a Seattle-based painter and writer, specializing in joy. I paint daily and write weekly about joy. Since 2017, I have been painting, thinking, and writing about joy–what it is, why it matters, how to cultivate it, and why we all deserve it.To me, joy is an optimism of spirit we all carry within us. It’s sparked through our actions and, unlike happiness, is not dependent on our circumstances to be felt. Paradoxically, we can feel joy at the same time we feel anger, sadness, and grief.
I am a contemporary pointillist, non-objective painter, working in vibrant colors. Recent studies show that looking at colorful art not only reduces stress and increases cognition, but it is also the neurochemical equivalent of looking at someone you love.
My paintings look like layers and layers of soft, colorful flower petals arranged in a pleasing way, designed to bring you joy. I take a lot of inspiration from the natural world of the Pacific Northwest–our gorgeous gardens, trees, lakes, lily ponds, sunrises and sunsets.
I create works about joy to feel better–the process of painting soothes me. Re-assembling the colors, creating gentle patterns with petal-shaped brush marks, and working with hues I love brings me joy and mends something inside me. My work invites people into a dialogue about joy and serves as a touchstone for how they can find and create more joy in their lives.
A special feature of my process is the array of colors within each brush mark. Each mark contains dozens of slender lines of color, that engage the viewer in optically mixing the colors–inviting them into the process as they find their own joy in my non-objective paintings.
