Artwork Description
Description
Black and white photograph of a rock floating above its shadow. Linear border is added to allow full image to be defined on a white background. It is not part of the actual photograph.
15" x 11" image matted to 20" x 16" (with frame 21' x 17" x 1")
Collection Statement
Floating Rocks is a series of photographs made in response to both the beauty and the uncertainty of life in a liminal state. There can be calm in the moment, yet it coexists with uneasiness, living indefinitely on a threshold between here and some unrealized there. Photographs from the Floating Rocks series have appeared in gallery shows nationally and one is scheduled for book publication in 2022.
Artist Information
Bio
Michelle Friars is an artist and photographer who lives on a small island in the Salish Sea just a short ferry ride from Seattle. Her background as an art historian specializing in medieval and 14th c Italian art left her with a love of tales of mystery and the miraculous. She originally got into photography to shoot reference photos for portrait work and to document finished artwork. Over time, she developed a penchant for taking photos as an artistic practice on its own. Michelle is an alum of Columbia University and the Kang-O’Higgins Atelier at Gage Academy in Seattle. Her drawings and photographs have appeared in galleries, museums and publications across the U.S.
