Artist Information
Bio
Sylwia Narbutt (b.1978) is a Polish visual artist based in London, UK.
Sylwia often uses organic themes to explore what's hidden, misunderstood or repressed. Using the brittle textures and monumental figures of dead trees in her paintings reflects life's fragility. She is looking into forms that are somehow changed from their original self. She is interested in added meaning, by time, by place, through their history or by a change of context.

In the last couple of years, Narbutt’s pallet consists mainly shades of red, oranges and pinks – reminding us of make-up colours, like blush or lipstick. It’s the artist's conscious decision to restrict her pallet to ‘womanly’ colours. Restrictions that turned out to be very freeing. The colour red is loaded with symbolism and meaning. We are living in a constant emergency – climate change, pandemic, colonialism, fascists sticking their heads out all over the world. The alerting colour scheme is very fitting.
Artist Statement
My recent work explores wild territories – as remembered or imagined. Dry branches, anthropomorphic in their forms, appear in motion, ready to depart.
My pallet consists of shades of reds, loaded with symbolism and meaning. We are living in a constant state of emergency – climate change, pandemics, and wars. The altered colour scheme feels very fitting. While painting pictures inspired by nature knowing that something is very wrong.
By quick brushwork I want to convey a dreamy, fairy-tale-like world underlined with urgency and unease.
I’m focusing on trees and beliefs about their powers. Their wisdom and strength reflected in how we, see the world. Stories engraved in our instincts.
