Artist Information
Bio
Elizabeth Mikellides is a British Greek-Cypriot artist based in Surrey and creates art inspired by music. Interests in music and art have always been important to Elizabeth and at one stage, she had seriously considered becoming a professional pianist. Choosing visual art in the end, Elizabeth studied a BA (Hons) in Drawing at Camberwell College of Art and then an MA in Fine Art Media at The Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, London.
At Camberwell, Elizabeth found a way to combine her love for both art forms whilst investigating what the practice of contemporary Drawing really was.
Upon completing her studies, Elizabeth moved abroad to Brussels, Belgium and took up English teaching. Artmaking slowed to accommodate teaching work, which also offered great flexibility for when Elizabeth started her own family. Teaching art and piano lessons privately in Belgium, including running several art camps, for a period of 14 years, rekindled her desire to dedicate more time to creating art.
A return to the UK in the summer of 2019 made it easier for Elizabeth to pick up where she left off and she has since been enjoying working with drawing and music in a more focussed and professional capacity.
Elizabeth has collaborated with musicians abroad and here, in the UK, interpreting their scores both visually and acoustically. She was one of the artists invited to exhibit at the ING Discerning Eye exhibition in September 2022 and became a member of the arts organization ArtCan in 2020.
Elizabeth is currently working on an important installation for ArtCan, to celebrate their 10-year anniversary, which is to be shown this September in London.
Artist Statement
The intersection of music and drawing is at the core of my artistic practice, where my mission is to harness the beauty of music and reveal it through colour.Having played the piano for several years, I have a strong personal respect and connection to music – especially to Bach!
Being a digital artist allows me to work with colours more precisely, through a group of coded letters and numbers as opposed to paint. I choose the metal ChromaLuxe to print my work on, because the printing process (through sublimation) offers an unparalleled, vibrant finish.
Mixing colours on a computer screen - through light - and not paint on a canvas, is a symbol of enlightenment, which, together with music, is the best medium through which to create my work that aims to uplift and spread joy!
