Bio
Mary Mann began her career as an illustrator and graphic designer after graduating from the Colorado Institute of Art. She began taking on commissions for murals in private residences and answering calls for public art projects, producing over 12 grant funded public murals throughout the city of Tacoma.
Mary finds inspiration in science and nature. Her studio practice allows her to produce smaller works that explore personal themes. She enjoys collaborating with fellow artists on projects and is dedicated to lifelong learning.
She is passionate about arts education and enjoys providing opportunities for high school students to work on public art commissions. Through project-based learning, Mary’s students have contributed to nine public murals.
Artist Statement
I’ve been drawing and painting from a very young age and my ideas are often inspired by the intersection of science and nature. The meditative process of painting is my preferred method to make sense of the world. As I tell my students, “It’s all about learning to see”. Through intense observation followed by playful exaggeration, I try to explore visual truth and pose surreal questions.
