Artist Statement
My art is extremely American in the sense that, like America, it is a melting pot. Instead of merging, mixing and evolving cultures, my art mixes influences from: 1. my favorite artists (Dufy, Kandinsky, Dali, Chagall, Pollock, Picasso, El Greco, Miro, Van Gogh, Degas, Gauguin, to name a few); 2. the places I have lived (pothole prairies of North Dakota, forested lakes and rivers of western Minnesota, high plains and Rocky Mountains of Colorado, tropical jungles and mountains of Taiwan, rolling hills of the Palouse in eastern Washington, tall, thick forests of western Washington); 3. my interests (science fiction, astronomy, history, physics, sociology, fantasy, poetry, and nature); and 4. the people I have known (my teachers, friends, lovers, children, brothers, cousins, nieces and nephews, students and colleagues). My art has been described as Gothic Abstract, as Psychedelic Cartoons, as Rorschach Landscapes, as Abstract Pop Art, and as Punk Dada Pareidolia. My art has gone through several stages and is now in an uneasy balance of several prior motifs.
